HEADTEACHERS END OF TERM UPDATE

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the end of the Spring term, I wanted to take the opportunity to share the many positive developments from across the school over recent weeks, and highlight some of our up and coming events.

Year 9 Options Evening
It was great to see so many families attending, engaging with staff and supporting students as they consider their next steps at our Year 9 Curriculum Choices Evening. Thank you to everyone who came along and contributed to such a positive event. A special mention to our Year 11 prefects, who were outstanding throughout the evening, welcoming families, supporting visitors and representing the school with maturity and pride.

Sporting Success
Our students have continued to represent the school brilliantly. The netball teams have enjoyed a very successful few weeks competing in the Broxtowe tournaments. Notably, our Year 8/9 team finished second in their age group and our Year 7 team secured an impressive 21–1 victory. In addition, our Year 9 boys’ football team reached the South Notts Cup quarter-finals, our Year 11 boys progressed to the semi-finals and our Year 7 rugby team were crowned joint county champions. We are incredibly proud of their teamwork and commitment.

World Book Day
We also marked World Book Day with a fantastic whole-school celebration. Students were surprised to see staff dressed as a range of book characters and a variety of activities took place throughout the day to promote a love of reading. It was a great opportunity to celebrate literacy and engage students in reading in a fun and memorable way.

Comic Relief
Students have also shown fantastic generosity and community spirit through their support of Comic Relief. Thanks to their enthusiasm and contributions, we raised an impressive £900. This is a wonderful example of our school community coming together for an important cause.

Spring Music Concert
We recently celebrated our Spring Concert, Spring Sounds and it was an amazing evening. Students from Year 7 to Year 13 gave amazing performances, we are incredibly proud of our talented students - what a wonderful night!

Year 10 Careers Day
Our Year 10 Careers Day was a fantastic success, with the whole year group taking part in a range of valuable activities. More than 30 external providers from local businesses and organisations supported the day, giving students the opportunity to hear a variety of careers presentations and take part in individual careers interviews. It was a really positive experience that helped students build confidence, broaden their understanding of future pathways and think carefully about their next steps. We are very grateful to all of the providers who helped make the day such a success.

New Style Uniform
Looking ahead, from September we will be launching our new style school uniform. This will be introduced with our new Year 7 students, while students in other year groups will have the option to adopt the new blazer or the new jumper as part of a phased transition. Further details are available on the school website.

Summer Term
In school, we continue to focus on both high standards of behaviour and strong pastoral support. Staff have been developing and sharing strategies to support student engagement and reduce the need for sanctions, alongside maintaining clear and consistent expectations. At the same time, we are placing a strong emphasis on recognising and rewarding positive behaviour, with reward events and recognition activities taking place.

The summer term also marks the beginning of GCSE examinations for our Year 11 students. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, resilience and determination throughout their studies and we wish them every success as they approach this important milestone. We will continue to support them every step of the way.

Dates
16th April 2026 Year 8 Parents Evening
30th April 2026 Year 12 Parents Evening
14th May 2026 Year 7 Parents Evening
30th June 2026 Sixth Form Transition
15th July 2026 Sports Day

Finally, thank you for your continued support this term. It has been a busy and productive period and we are very proud of all that our students have achieved.

We wish you and your families a restful and enjoyable Easter break.

Kind regards,
Sarah York

We understand that this week's secondary school place offers have caused frustration and uncertainty for some families, particularly those who were hoping for a place at their local school.

We want to reassure families within our community that Chilwell School is currently working with the Local Authority to explore the possibility of offering additional Year 7 places. Our priority is to support local children and ensure that families in our area have access to a high-quality secondary education close to home.

We strongly believe that children should have the opportunity to attend a school within their own community, learning alongside local friends, building lasting connections and avoiding long daily journeys of 30–40 minutes or more to schools further away.

As we explore the potential for additional places, we are also looking ahead to the future of Chilwell School. Plans are in place for significant development of the site, including brand new facilities expected to be completed within the next three years, allowing us to grow into a larger, modern school that can support even more young people from our local area.

If you are interested in a place at Chilwell School, please contact our office team (office@chilwellschool.co.uk), who will be happy to speak with you and keep you informed as discussions progress.

Chilwell School is proud to serve its community and we remain committed to ensuring that local children have the opportunity to attend a school at the heart of the community they live in.

As we come to the end of another busy term, I would like to take this opportunity to say how proud we are of our students. They have been commendable throughout the winter months, showing resilience, positivity and maturity - even when faced with a school site that has been a little leaky in places and undeniably cold at times. Their attitude and commitment to learning have not gone unnoticed and we are incredibly grateful for the way they continue to represent our school community.

This term has been full of energy and opportunity. We have enjoyed a wide range of sporting fixtures, with students demonstrating teamwork, determination and excellent sportsmanship. Alongside this, there have been a number of exciting trips and enrichment activities that have helped bring learning to life beyond the classroom. To see just how much our students get up to, we encourage families to follow our Instagram page, where we regularly share snapshots of the wonderful experiences taking place across the school.

While this project is still in its very early stages, I want to reassure you that the process has now officially begun. We are currently in the feasibility stage, during which the site is being carefully assessed to determine the most appropriate positioning and layout for a new school building. At this stage, no decisions have been finalised.

As part of this initial work, we have completed the first round of questionnaires and discussions that focus on how the school currently operates and, most importantly, what matters most to our pupils, families, staff and wider community. This feedback is a crucial foundation for shaping any future plans.

It is important to be open about timescales. Large-scale school rebuild projects are complex and typically span several years. At present, we are anticipating an overall timeline of approximately three years, though this is subject to change as feasibility work and planning progress.

One principle that is extremely important to us is that the school site remains at the heart of the community. Access to leisure facilities and community use of the site are key priorities, and these are central to our ongoing discussions.

We are currently in conversations with all relevant partners to ensure that any future development delivers the very best outcome for both the school and the wider community. As plans develop and more certainty becomes available, we will keep families fully informed and provide further opportunities to share views.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. We appreciate that change can raise questions and we are committed to clear communication as this process moves forward.

Keeping our students safe is always our highest priority. We are pleased to share that we have added new safeguarding tools to the school website and student portal to make it easier for students, parents and staff to get help, raise concerns and access support whenever they need it.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞 – 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧
Confide is a simple online form that allows worries or concerns to be reported quickly and safely.
Can be used by students, parents or staff
Concerns can be shared anonymously if preferred
Suitable for any issue that makes you feel worried, unsafe, or unsure
Reports are sent directly to the school’s safeguarding team for follow-up and support

Confide is there for those moments when speaking to someone in person feels difficult, or when you want to make sure something important is shared.

𝐂𝐄𝐎𝐏 – 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭
We have also added direct access to CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command) for support with online safety concerns.
For worries about online behaviour
If someone is making you feel uncomfortable or unsafe online
For concerns about online grooming, exploitation or abuse
Run by CEOP, a specialist command of UK police focused on protecting children online

CEOP provides expert help and advice, and reports go straight to trained professionals who know how to respond to online safety concerns.

These tools are there to ensure that no concern is too small and that everyone in our school community knows where to turn for help. We encourage students and families to familiarise themselves with these features and use them whenever needed.

𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬
While the vast majority of students continue to meet expectations, we have recently seen an increase in requests to rearrange detentions. We would like to remind families that detentions are an important part of maintaining high standards and consistency across the school. Rearranging detentions will only be permitted in extreme circumstances (medical appointments, etc) and requests for convenience or clashes with social arrangements will not be authorised. We appreciate your support in reinforcing the message that actions have consequences and that accountability is part of helping our young people develop responsibility and resilience.

𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐃 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬
We now have a number of regular, weekly appointments that can be booked by parents/carers enabling them to have face to face meetings with the school SENCO, through this new method of effective communication we aim provide a consistent channel to discuss your child’s education whilst ensuring parents/carers have the opportunity to remain fully involved via:
Sharing/discussing insights from teachers and support staff
Adjusting support strategies/reasonable adjustments
Discussing changes at home that may affect learning
Raising and discussing concerns
Please visit our website to book a meeting – in the “points for discussion” section please provide some information so the SENCO can be prepared if needed.

As we head into half term, we would like to wish all students and their families a restful and enjoyable break. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday 23rd February 2026. A reminder that all students should be in their tutor rooms by 8.40am ready to start the day promptly.

Finally, a reminder of the importance of attendance and punctuality. Being in school, on time, every day plays a vital role in students’ learning, progress and wellbeing. Arriving promptly ensures students are settled, supported and ready to learn from the very start of the day, setting positive habits that will benefit them both now and in the future.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Dear Families,

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and would like to wish you all a very happy New Year as we begin 2026. We are very much looking forward to welcoming all students back to school tomorrow and starting the new term together.

Although our heating systems are fully operational and classrooms will be warm, the current spell of extreme cold weather means we kindly ask that children attend school wearing appropriate warm school clothing. Please ensure they have a warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves and suitable school footwear to keep them comfortable and safe, particularly during arrival, departure and outdoor periods.

Our school site has been gritted; however, we ask everyone to take extra care when travelling to and from school. Roads, pavements and footpaths remain slippery in places, so please allow extra time for journeys and remain vigilant when walking on and around the school grounds.

Students are expected to be in tutor rooms for 8:40am.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep everyone safe. We look forward to welcoming the students back tomorrow and to a positive and successful year ahead.
