Sixth Form Newsletter - February 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians

This is the second newsletter specifically for the parents/guardians of Sixth Form students.

On behalf of the Sixth Form team of tutors, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support. We have had a very positive ½ term. Year 13 students completed their university applications by the deadline. We are now in the process of waiting for offers and students making their Firm and Insurance choices. Year 12 students continue to have excellent attendance in lessons and this is reflected in the positive attitudes to learning as demonstrated by the vast majority of students in the Sixth Form.

Year 13

Post Sixth Form

As stated, the majority of Year 13 students have applied for university and all their applications were submitted before the deadline date. As students begin to receive their offers I know that you are thinking about applying for student loans please see: https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance and Student finance.

Higher apprenticeships are now being released and we are currently supporting those students who are looking to follow this pathway after sixth form. Every student has been given a careers interview to help them begin to focus on their next steps.

Revision

As part of the previous Discovery day, Y13 students were given strategies to help them prepare for their forthcoming examinations. There are 95 days before the first A Level examination.  Currently, students should be completing 1 hour revision in Lakeview and a further 1 hour revision each evening. Ideally, we would expect to see each student complete approximately 150 hours of revision.

PSHE

In order to better target support, the PSHE sessions will be by appointment so that tutors are able to give in depth support and advice as we move towards the end of Y13 studies. Those students who are not being interviewed during PSHE should be using the time for revision.

Year 12

Broxtowe Mayor’s Appeal

Year 12 were responsible for organising the recent appeal. It is a delight to report that as a school we collected 190 kgs for the local food banks which was a tremendous achievement.

Discovery Day

The next discovery day will be on 2nd March 2023. More details to follow.

PSHE

We are discussing this with Year 12. This is a compulsory part of the curriculum, and we expect full attendance. If there are gaps in attendance next ½ term I will be contacting parents/guardians individually to raise our concerns.

Planning our next steps

There will be a UCAS fair visit on 17th March 2023 at University of Derby. This will be an opportunity for students to begin to think about their next steps and how to begin preparing for those opportunities.

All Year 12 students are required to complete a work experience. The work experience week takes place during the week beginning 17th July 2023. Students need to be looking for placements as well as being mindful of the documents which need completing on the work experience section within the Sixth Form area of the website.

University application

We are currently running a support group for those students who are considering applying to universities or courses which require an interview.

There is a debating club for those students who are considering applying for law.

After ½ term there will be a drop in group to look at different types of university.

We will be sending out more information about the application process for university over the next few weeks

Registration

All students must attend assembly on monday, we will be contacting parents/guardians if students do not attend.

Currently, some students are not attending PSHE lessons, it is important that these lessons are attended.

As you are aware, we are building independent learning skills to help our students manage their learning and meet deadlines. We have been delighted that the majority of students are working with their tutors to build up their skills.

If students are arriving at school outside morning registration they will need to enter the school through reception. It is essential that they sign in using the companion app which has been sent to all students, this means that they can either sign in using their phones if they wish or just use the app to show a QR code to the sign-in ipad screen. They will then be able to access school through the boot change area. This also applies to signing out other than at the end of the day.
