Welcome to Chilwell School

Share, Care, Believe, Achieve

22nd November 2024

On Wednesday of this week, we held a careers fair for students in years ten to thirteen. Thank you to Ms Fyles and Ms Underdown for co-coordinating such a fantastic event.

With careers information and representatives from over thirty organisations, there was plenty of opportunity for students to discuss their future plans and find out more facts about courses and careers.

Students will be able to follow up the day with further discussion and planning in their PSHCE lessons over the next few weeks. Thank you to all the organisations that were represented at the careers fair - the school is committed to ensuring that our students get the best possible advice and support in looking forward to the next stage of their education. See our separate news item here.

Sixth form applications
We have started meetings with students who have applied to Lakeview sixth form at Chilwell School. This gives the opportunity for students to be sharing their planned courses and to get further information on the small class sizes, excellent teaching and opportunities available at the school. If there are students who are yet to submit their application, they need to do this soon so that we can complete the first round of discussions before the Christmas break.

Trip to Poland

Last weekend a group of staff and students visited Krakow and Auschwitz. It was an opportunity to learn more about the holocaust and to develop an understanding of historical and modern genocides. The students visited the old town, Wawel Castle, Auschwitz - Birkenau and Galicia Jewish Museum. During their trip to the Museum, they listened to a talk from a descendant of victims of the holocaust who spoke of her mother helping her best friend to escape a ghetto. She was able to show us some of the medals that her mother was given. All of the students were fantastic throughout the trip.

Holiday activity and Food (HAF) programme

Nottinghamshire County Council will start to take bookings for the final sessions of 2024 Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF) on Monday 25th November, ready for the winter holidays.

HAF provides FUNDED activities and food for children receiving benefits and related free school meals. These programmes run during the following school holidays: spring (Easter), summer, autumn (October) and Christmas holidays.

Children aged between 5 – 16 years (Reception aged 4 and year 11 inclusive) in receipt of benefits related free school meals are eligible for free holiday activities and food. This is not a food voucher scheme; all activities happen face to face.

Holiday activity listings will be live from Monday 25th November 2024 here: Activities and venues | Nottinghamshire County Council

Families with eligible children will need to use their unique HAF code when booking onto holiday clubs, this is taken at point of booking and is the same unique code that was distributed in 2023.

If a child does not have a HAF code, parents/carers can apply for one here: Register for a HAF code | Nottinghamshire County Council

Benefits of the programme for children during school holidays:

  • eating healthily over the school holidays
  • being active during the school holidays
  • taking part in engaging and enriching activities which support the development of resilience, character and wellbeing along with their wider educational attainment
  • being safe and not to be socially isolated
  • having a greater knowledge of health and nutrition
  • being more engaged with school and other local services

If you would like more information contact the helpline on: 0115 9774 999 (line open 10am-2pm, Monday to Friday).

Reminder to Parents: Maintaining Dinner Account Balances

We have noticed an increase in dinner accounts with negative balances. Please ensure your child’s dinner account is kept topped up if they are purchasing school meals.

If an account remains in a negative balance and a further purchase is attempted, parents/carers will be contacted to either:

1. Provide a packed lunch, or

2. Top up the account before any further meals can be issued.

Your cooperation in keeping accounts up to date is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Children in Need
Last week's Children in Need day raised £833.00. Well done to everyone involved!

**PLEASE NOTE** Calls may be monitored or recorded for training and quality purposes.
