Welcome to Chilwell School

Share, Care, Believe, Achieve

22nd May 2020

In a parallel school year, I would have been seeing students through today and wishing them well over the half-term break until I saw them again. Our older students would have been well into their examinations and would be welcoming the week away from school before the assessment process started again.

Instead, whilst the school has been much quieter today, we have not lost the excitement of looking forward to seeing our students again. Our intention at present is to bring our ten and twelve students back on to site and today, I have toured the classrooms as they are set up for smaller groups, as safety equipment arrives and as routes around the building are confirmed.

Planned return

We continue to plan with our staff and discuss developments with partner primary schools, the local authority, trade unions and the department for education.

I have already informed you on 12th May that we would not be opening unless we had everything in place. Last week, I mentioned that we were awaiting the guidance for secondary schools from the department of education that we were told would be with us by Wednesday. I regret that this has not arrived. Our governing body met on Wednesday and are fully aware of everything that we have put in place.

We will continue to do everything we can to bring face to face teaching to our year tens and twelves as soon as we can.

Children of key workers

Some parents have highlighted that their circumstances are now changing and they are having to return to work after the half-term break. We are putting the key worker form back upon Weduc - please complete it if your circumstances have changed. Please be aware that students who come into school under these arrangements will be accommodated in our current provision - no formal teaching arrangements will exist unless and until the phased return for year ten and twelve students takes place. When this takes place, on site teaching will be in place for year ten and twelve students only.

Google classroom

We hope the addition of parents as "guardians" in google classroom has helped you understand the range of tasks that have been set. Please be aware that "guardian" status will only send you an email informing you of the work. It does not give you access to the google classroom environment. Please also remind your children to check their emails for information from teachers and feedback on their work. I am aware that there has been a lot of feedback given that unfortunately students have missed through not checking for notifications.

Advice for parents and carers

You may be interested to read advice that came out today regarding how parents might support their children. I am pleased that this confirms the key messages we have been giving you since March.

Sad news

Many in the community will already be aware of the tragic loss of Kate Bates, one of our parents. Kate was an immense support to many schools in the area and our thoughts and condolences go to her family. At this time of confusion and instability, it is important that we give thanks for those who offer strength and support to others.

I wish you all well and a peaceful half-term.
